About The Commodore
Founded in 2016, The Commodore quickly became a neighborhood bar known for its welcoming, come-as-you-are atmosphere and strong sense of community. From day one, it attracted a loyal following of both regulars and industry friends who made it a go-to gathering place in Washington, DC.
After closing its original location in 2019, The Commodore returned in 2021 with a new home in Dupont Circle at 1636 17th Street NW, reconnecting with longtime guests while welcoming a new generation of regulars. The spirit of the bar remained the same: familiar faces, an easygoing vibe, and a place where anyone can settle in and feel like part of the neighborhood.
In 2023, The Commodore entered its next chapter under the ownership of General Manager and Owner Rob Van de Graaff and Executive Chef and Owner Steve Kim. Together, they continue to carry the bar forward while staying true to the community-driven energy that has defined The Commodore since the beginning.
Today, The Commodore remains proud to be DC’s “Five-Star Dive Bar” — a place to meet, unwind, and spend time with friends, old and new. A second location in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia is set to open soon, bringing the same neighborhood spirit across the river.
